The Johnny Cash Project

"The Johnny Cash Project is a global collective art project, and we would love for you to participate. Through this website, we invite you to share your vision of Johnny Cash, as he lives on in your mind’s eye. Working with a single image as a template, and using a custom drawing tool, you’ll create a unique and personal portrait of Johnny. Your work will then be combined with art from participants around the world, and integrated into a collective whole: a music video for "Ain’t No Grave", rising from a sea of one-of-a-kind portraits.
Strung together and played in sequence over the song, the portraits will create a moving, ever evolving homage to this beloved musical icon.  What’s more, as new people discover and contribute to the project, this living portrait will continue to transform and grow, so it’s virtually never the same video twice."

Just thought this was such a cool idea... Go design a frame!

8. Warren - Paperwork

I carried a whole bunch of cardboard to class today, but I ended up forgetting my airplanes at home. Here are some pics:

#1 - my favorite airplane -- flies the best
#2 - I folded this one more randomly -- it flies ok
 testing out #2
#2 flies
 #1 flies
This one didn't turn out as well. I'm not really sure what I was going for on this one.
 This one doesn't fly either

and I made a crane as well.

7 - Warren - Some inspiration

I've been looking at working with cardboard, so I thought this guy's work was really cool:

Here's an example of his work:

Here's something else I found that was really cool.

7 - Cole van Krieken: Material Alchemy Examples

One thing I found that I thought best exemplified the spirit of material alchemy were these portraits done with cassette tapes.

London Calling

Bob Dylan

Jimi Hendrix

I really liked these examples of using mixed styles of recycled wood to create furniture.

7- Katie Deutsch - Material Alchemy Inspiration

My roommate is a dual-degree. He's an apparel major. Last year he made this dress out of these foam circles (original purpose: medical?) from the recycling center. Pretty cool.

(ps. recognize the model?)

7 - Jocelyn W - Material Alchemy

I was inspired by this furniture created entirely from concentric circles of newspaper rolls that can in fact support the weight of a person.

Katharine Mead - Material Alchemy Inspiration

I found a few really inspiring examples of material alchemy:

1. Road sign mural in Meadville, PA (no relation, ha!)

2. newspaper sculptures:

3. old illustrated books can do amazing things as well:

4. one final thing - garbage bag animals!  not only material alchemy, but also using power from the passing subway trains.

07 - Alli Schaaff: Recycled Art

These have been christened the top 5 chairs made from trash by Inhabitat.com. I found them inspiring for the Material Alchemy project - great examples of both form and function.

Made of plastic shopping bags.

Made of 100% wasted plastic.

Inspired by a bird's nest, made of a bamboo frame and scrap fabric.

Made of aluminum can tabs.

Made of scrap wood and held together with a recycled bicycle tire frame.

Material Alchemy - Molly Junck

Ran across this when looking for inspiration: a chandelier made of recycled plastic silverware.

This one is made of coathangers. So awesome!

Paper and Nature alchemy--Claudine

I found two extraordinary "alchemy" works:

1) Paper art by Danish artist Peter Callesen....It's actually insane.

2) Boulder in Portugal turned into a practical home:
