In my opinion the entire debate of whether a toilet seat can be art or not is irrelevant. Art is art to whoever wants to see it that way. It can be anything. The beauty of art is that it is dynamic and can be viewed in terms of technique, originality, palette, realism, idealism, political statement....etc. It is possible that a work of art for any person can fit in one of these categories but not all of them. Art can make you notice the beauty of the world around you or it can make you cringe in fear or disgust to make a statement. It all then depends on the viewer and whether they want to understand the artist's purpose.
My favorite artist in terms of technique would have to be Leonardo DaVinci. His delicate line quality and his perfect use of sfumatto and chiaroscuro is mind boggling. My favorite artist in terms of creativity and "statement" would have been to be Swoon. She is an underground artist who technically vandalizes the streets of New York City with her artwork to make political and social statements.

Art is something that invokes emotion in the viewer whether it is good or bad. It makes the viewer think and expand their mind.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I visit the MoMA, a painting by Piscasso called Boy Leading a Horse always captures my attention. There is just something about it, but I can't pinpoint the reason.
