To me, art is whatever the artist creates that inspires a feeling or emotion in me. While art can contain a message, the most important part of the whole is the emotion that the piece instills. Without being able to create emotion, even the most poignant message is little more than an encyclopedia entry. The message is not necessary for art.
In a lot of the work of the impressionists, there is no overt point, just pastoral nature and countryside scenes that instill a sense of peace and calm. They are no less art because they portray only beauty.
