What is Art?

To me art is both the mind's way of expressing what is within to the outside world and looking at what already exists on the outside for its meaning in our world. As for the first part of this definition, I'd like to post some picture by the artist Francis Bacon. I find that his artwork clearly conveys the angry and almost fearful view of the world this artist possesses. He clearly conveys his emotion through art.
As for the second part of my definition, I think the picture of the urinal takes an everyday object and begs us to look at it in a more analytic light. For me, the picture evokes a strong emotion of disgust and embodies the grime and filth of the modern cities today. It is uncomfortable to look at the grimy object. To put it more extremely it almost represents the deterioration and corruption of our society. The artist has successfully turned an ordinary object into something meaningful to me.
