1 - Daniella Prince: What is Art?
This image is one of many sketches by Ernst Haeckel, a German biologist. His book, Kunstformen der Natur, which contained many of these illustrations of different taxonomic groups, is a great example of one of the less common ways of creating art. Anatomic sketches are often a chore for scientists, but Haeckel was able to arrange his studies of morphology in an artistic manner. Art can be created by the creative expression of experience, emotions or ideas. His art is the creative expression of his idea about these organisms-- that they showed interesting symmetry and organization.
