Material Alchemy: a symbol piece- Leigh Holmes

For my project I choose to make my piece represent a bigger idea: peace. The bird cage represents war that is repressing the caged dove (peace). There are holes in the cage (some big some small and it is hard to see them in the picture)  because peace is attempting to break free, and eventually someday there will no longer be tension and war between countries and the dove will fly free. Written on the cage on the top rim are song lyrics from anti-war songs. For the lyrics, i only wrote the word war in red while all the other words are in white. The words going down the posts of the cage is war translated into other languages. The colors for these words have no significance just there for a pattern. The dove is hand sewn using material from a friends graduation gown and stuffed with toilet paper and the beak is a hair clip. Building the cage took some time, but i think it turned out nice. Sewing the dove was a challenge because i have not hand sewn anything in a while and therefore it took me way longer then i expected.
